Happy Birthday, Skullgirls!!

Yesterday (and today) was the anniversary of the release of Skullgirls!

It was a pretty eventful year, but things have been turning around lately so let’s hope this year is even better!

Thank you for the entire team for working so hard to make this wonderful game, and thank you for the whole community for helping it stay strong even when all odds were against it.

We have a lot to look foward to this year, so let’s continue to work hard Skullbros!!

My submission for Piapro’s 2013 Yuki Miku Design contest. This year’s theme was Sweets.

When you think of winter sweets, you imediatelly think of ice-cream. But ice-cream is plain so I cooked a parfait!

(well, that’s what I wrote, but that’s wrong isn’t it? “When you think of cold sweets” would be the right thing to say…)

Yuki Miku is blue-ish, so I tried to do a Blueberry parfait. Her hair ended up cream-color, but the overall outfit has to at least resemble winter so I couldn’t do a classic strawberry parfait. I tried to mimic the several layers in a parfait by making layered clothing and alternating between the two colors (cream and purple).

Overall I think I didn’t do such a good job as she doesn’t resemble Miku all that much, but I had fun!

Quick drawing I did at the Yoshitaka Amano exposition held at the Joh Mabe gallery. Great exposition, it ends this wednesday but if you can find time to visit it’s totally worth it! Seeing his art on person is amazing.

They had a space there where people could write letters to Amano; at the end of the exposition they’re going to file them together and send them to him. Loved this initiative! =) Quite a few people were drawing things, so I joined them and did this Terra/Tina.

Wish I had a little more time to play with the colors, but I had already wasted way too much time writing the letter itself hahah orz

Bunch of small drawings!! To tell the truth those silly small drawings are the ones I enjoy doing the most. Mostly because they’re normally just small things I thought were funny.

First two are drawings I did yesterday. Just being silly with OCs.

The last two are drawings I did a loooooooooo~ng time ago, but I still like them. First one is mine and my BF’s WoW characters - They’re undeads. He’s sewing her arm on. Because it fell. It’s funny, you guys can laugh if you want! Second one is our Ragnarok characters doing the same thing, except not.

Why do you prefer it over drawing on paper? How do you do it? I’m under the impression that I’m getting worse and worse at digital art. Which is horrible, because in most professional works digital is required, and I can’t afford to sketch-and-scan, sketch-and-scan ad infinitum because it just…

Answering in order to help a (great) fellow artist.

I used to be more familiar with drawing on paper over digital, but lately the situation has changed due to several reasons: My (awesomely sweet) friends chipped in to buy me a new tablet, soon after that I started working on Skullgirls and then a crazy (awesome) friend got me into some crazyness that got me drawing constantly. To tell the truth, now I feel I can’t draw on paper as well as I did before… OTL

Overall, I think to really get into digital drawing you gotta experiment with many different softwares until you get used to something. The brush recommended for drawing SG’s frames worked much better than any default brush, but even with this Photoshop wasn’t holding up to my expectations. I gave SAI a try and instantly fell in love with how sharp the lines made with the Pen tool looked. Great for manga artists and people that use really thick outlines like me.

I think another thing that helped me a lot was watching live streams. When I watched other artists drawing, I could see not only how they used their softwares, but also that many struggled with the same things as I did. Sometimes you’re in the right path for a certain thing, but give up midway because you think you’re just messing up. Seeing an experienced artist go from beginning to end makes you realize what steps are important before reaching completion.

Not such a useful reply, specially because I’m nowhere near as experienced and good as solfi is, but hopefully my own path to get used to digital can help someone get started too. In the end, it’s all about struggle and never giving up (or being forced to draw like crazy, which is what happened to me :V)

Here are some keychains I’m going to sell at AGE Campinas!! Those are the test ones, I’m not entirelly sure whether they’re ok or not… Anyway, there’s going to be more characters, plus some clay porings keychains! Not to mention the (much cooler) stuff from the gals I’m sharing the table with.

Yes, I worked on Skullgirls - it was for a short time, little more than a month. Hopefully I’ll get to help them a little more when they start doing DLCs. I’m a clean up artist, we’re contract artists so not exactly part of the main team heheh

Since even persona-sama posted his rough animations, I’m going to join in the fun too =)

One of the few clean-up animations I did for Skullgirls. Since I joined the clean-up team quite late I only got the chance to work with Valentine - worth every second, I learned so much from it.

This is the animation no one ever sees because everyone techs :’( Also I guarantee it looks better in game, I just don’t know how to gif. Don’t know who’s the rough animator, if it’s you/you can recognize the style please tell me so I can credit =)

Finally done~! My portable watercolor set, altoid tin + sakura koi waterbrush.

I still don’t know how to use watercolors yet, so I filled it with cheap watercolors I had around. Which is why I didn’t bother to make it less messy XP
